Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Virginia

Selling a car in Virginia requires a number of important documents to ensure the process is legal and smooth. Below is a comprehensive list of the paperwork you'll need to sell your vehicle in Virginia, along with helpful links to additional resources.

1. Vehicle Title (Certificate of Title)

The vehicle's title must be signed over to the buyer. Both the seller and buyer need to fill out the relevant sections, including the odometer reading and sale price. If the title is lost or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title before selling the vehicle. You can apply for a duplicate title through the Virginia DMV.

2. Bill of Sale

While not always legally required, a Bill of Sale is highly recommended. It includes the sale price, buyer and seller information, and the vehicle's details. This document serves as proof of the transaction and protects both parties in case of any future disputes.

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement

For vehicles less than 10 years old, an odometer reading must be provided. This is usually included on the title, but if not, a separate Odometer Disclosure Statement may be required.

4. Emissions Inspection Certificate (if applicable)

In certain areas of Virginia, emissions testing is required before selling the vehicle. The seller must provide a valid emissions certificate, which is valid for two years.

5. Safety Inspection Certificate

A valid safety inspection certificate is required for all vehicles sold in Virginia. The inspection must have been completed within the past 12 months.

6. Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

To officially release yourself from liability once the car is sold, you must notify the Virginia DMV. This can be done online or in-person. This protects you from any fines, tickets, or other legal issues incurred by the buyer after the sale.

7. Vehicle Registration

If you still have the vehicle's registration, provide it to the buyer. While not required for the sale, it can be useful for the buyer when transferring ownership.

8. License Plates

In Virginia, the seller is required to remove the license plates from the vehicle. You may transfer them to another vehicle or return them to the Virginia DMV
