Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in South Dakota
If you're planning to sell your car in South Dakota, there are specific documents you need to have ready to ensure a smooth transaction. Here's a comprehensive list of the paperwork you'll need, along with some helpful links to guide you through the process.
1. Certificate of Title
You must provide the Certificate of Title to the buyer, and it must be properly signed over. On the back of the title, both the seller and the buyer must complete the required information, including the sale price and odometer reading.
2. Bill of Sale
Although not mandatory, a Bill of Sale can serve as proof of the transaction. It includes details like the vehicle’s make, model, year, VIN, sale price, and date of sale. Both the buyer and seller should keep copies.
3. Odometer Disclosure
South Dakota requires an Odometer Disclosure for vehicles less than 10 years old. You can fill this out on the title or use a separate Odometer Disclosure form.
4. Notice of Sale
After selling the car, the seller is required to submit a Notice of Sale to the South Dakota Department of Revenue within 30 days. This releases the seller from liability and notifies the state of the ownership change.
5. Lien Release (if applicable)
If there’s a lien on the car, you must provide a lien release from the lienholder. The release needs to be signed and dated by the lienholder.
6. Vehicle History Report (optional)
Providing a vehicle history report can increase buyer confidence. It details any accidents, title changes, or other significant events related to the car.
