Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Oregon

Selling a car in Oregon requires gathering specific documents and following steps to ensure a smooth transaction. Below is a comprehensive list of the paperwork you'll need to sell your vehicle in Oregon:

1. Vehicle Title

The vehicle title is the most crucial document when selling a car. You, as the seller, need to:

  • Sign the title in the seller's section.
  • Ensure that the buyer signs in the designated area.
  • Provide the buyer with the odometer reading (if applicable).
  • Note that if there are multiple owners listed on the title, all must sign.

If your title is lost or damaged, you will need to apply for a duplicate title from the Oregon DMV.

2. Bill of Sale

While Oregon does not require a Bill of Sale for a title transfer, it is strongly recommended as it serves as a receipt for the transaction. It should include:

  • Vehicle details (make, model, year, and VIN).
  • Sale price and date of sale.
  • Names and signatures of both the buyer and the seller.

Some counties in Oregon may require a Bill of Sale for registration purposes.

3. Notice of Sale

After selling your car, you must notify the Oregon DMV by submitting a Notice of Sale online. This notifies the DMV that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. You can submit the notice online at the Oregon DMV website.

4. Odometer Disclosure

If your car is less than 10 years old, you will need to provide an Odometer Disclosure Statement, which can be written directly on the title or provided separately. Both the buyer and the seller must sign this statement.

5. Release of Lien (if applicable)

If you still have a loan on the car, you will need a lien release from your lender before selling it. The release of lien should accompany the vehicle title to ensure the transfer is legitimate.

6. Emissions Test (if applicable)

In certain areas of Oregon, such as Portland and Medford, you may be required to provide a passing emissions test before selling the car. Check with your local DMV office to confirm whether this applies to your vehicle.

7. Vehicle Registration

Though not required for the sale, having the vehicle's current registration can help ensure a smooth transaction. Make sure your registration is up to date at the time of sale.
