Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Montana
1. Vehicle Title
Ensure you have the original title, and it is properly assigned to the buyer with all necessary signatures.
2. Bill of Sale
A bill of sale is required to document the transaction details, including the sale price, vehicle information, and signatures of both parties.
3. Odometer Disclosure Statement
If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, provide an odometer disclosure statement with the current mileage.

4. Release of Liability
Complete and submit a release of liability form to the Montana MVD to notify them of the sale and to release you from future liability.
5. Lien Release (if applicable)
If there is a lien on the vehicle, provide a lien release from the lienholder indicating the lien has been satisfied.
