Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Missouri

Selling a car in Missouri requires several important documents. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need:

1. Certificate of Title

The most important document is the car’s title. The title must be signed by both the seller and the buyer.

2. Bill of Sale

While not mandatory, a bill of sale is recommended. It provides proof of the transaction and includes details such as the sale price, vehicle identification number (VIN), and the names and addresses of the buyer and seller.

You can use a template from the Missouri Department of Revenue website

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement

For vehicles less than 10 years old, an odometer disclosure statement is required. This statement records the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale.

4. Notice of Sale or Transfer

You must notify the Missouri Department of Revenue of the sale within 30 days. This can be done online or by submitting a completed Notice of Sale or Transfer (Form 5049).

Submit the form online or download it from the Missouri Department of Revenue website

5. Lien Release (if applicable)

If there is a lien on the vehicle, you must provide a lien release from the lienholder.

6. Safety Inspection Certificate

If the vehicle is more than 5 years old, provide a safety inspection certificate from an authorized Missouri inspection station.

7. Emissions Inspection Certificate (if applicable)

If required by your county, provide an emissions inspection certificate.
