Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Michigan
1. Vehicle Title
You must provide the signed title to the buyer, including the odometer reading and the sales price. If there is a lien on the title, you must also provide a lien release from the lender.

2. Bill of Sale
A Bill of Sale is recommended for private sales to document the transaction details. It should include the names and addresses of both the buyer and seller, the vehicle's make, model, year, VIN, and the sale price.
3. Vehicle History Report
Providing a vehicle history report can help build trust with the buyer by showing the car's maintenance history and any past accidents.
4. Notice of Sale
Notify the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) of the sale of the vehicle by completing the Notice of Sale form. This protects you from any liability for the vehicle after the sale.
5. Odometer Disclosure Statement
For vehicles less than 10 years old, an odometer disclosure statement is required. This can usually be found on the back of the title.
