Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Maryland
1. Vehicle Title
The vehicle title should be in your name, free of any liens, or with a lien release if applicable. As the seller, you'll need to complete the appropriate sections of the title, including your signature and the odometer reading. The buyer will also need to sign the title.

2. Bill of Sale
A Bill of Sale is required in Maryland if the vehicle is less than 7 years old and the sale price is less than the vehicle's book value, or if the vehicle is gifted. The Bill of Sale should include the following:
- Names and addresses of both the buyer and seller

- Sale price and date of sale

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement

4. Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate
In Maryland, you are required to provide the buyer with a valid Safety Inspection Certificate. The inspection must be completed by a licensed Maryland inspection station, and the certificate is valid for 90 days.

5. Notice of Sale
Maryland recommends that you file a Notice of Sale with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) after the sale is completed. This protects you from any liability if the new owner fails to title the vehicle or incurs fines or fees.
