Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Maine

1. Vehicle Title 

The vehicle title must be signed over to the buyer. Both the seller and buyer must complete the required sections, including signatures and the date of sale. For more details on how to complete the title, visit the Maine BMV website.

2. Bill of Sale 

A bill of sale is recommended to document the sale and includes information such as the sale price, vehicle details, and the names and signatures of both the seller and buyer. A bill of sale form can be found on the Maine BMV website.

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement 

If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, an odometer disclosure statement is required. This can usually be found on the back of the title or as a separate form.

4. Release of Liability 

A release of liability form is recommended to notify the BMV that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. This form can be found on the Maine BMV website.

5. Proof of Sale Tax Payment
