Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Kentucky
1. Vehicle Title
You must have the original vehicle title in your name to sell your car. The seller must fill out the assignment section of the title, including the odometer reading, buyer information, and signatures of both parties.

2. Bill of Sale
While not mandatory, a Bill of Sale is recommended to serve as a receipt for the transaction. The Bill of Sale should include:
- Seller and buyer’s full names and addresses
- Vehicle information (make, model, year, VIN)
- Sale price and date
- Signatures of both the buyer and seller
3. Odometer Disclosure Statement
Federal law requires an odometer disclosure for vehicles under 10 years old. In Kentucky, this is usually recorded directly on the title, but a separate Odometer Disclosure Statement may be required.

4. Affidavit of Incomplete Transfer (if applicable)
If the buyer cannot immediately transfer the title into their name, an Affidavit of Incomplete Transfer must be filed to notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

5. Remove the License Plate
In Kentucky, the seller is required to remove the license plate from the vehicle. The buyer will need to obtain their own plates.

6. Lien Release (if applicable)
If your vehicle has a lien, you must provide proof that the lien has been satisfied by obtaining a lien release from your lender.

7. Duplicate Title (if needed)
If the title is lost or damaged, you will need to apply for a duplicate title before completing the sale.
