Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Iowa

1. Vehicle Title

The vehicle title must be in your name, and any liens must be released before selling the car. Fill out the title's seller section, including your signature, the buyer’s name and address, and the odometer reading.

2. Bill of Sale

While not required for all sales, a Bill of Sale is highly recommended in Iowa. It serves as a receipt and proof of the transaction. The document should include:

  • Names and addresses of both buyer and seller
  • Vehicle information (make, model, year, VIN)
  • Sale price and date
  • Signatures of both parties

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement

For vehicles less than 10 years old, federal law requires an odometer disclosure. This information may be recorded on the title, or a separate Odometer Disclosure Statement form can be used.

4. Damage Disclosure Statement

In Iowa, a Damage Disclosure Statement is required for vehicles that are seven years old or newer. This document informs the buyer if the vehicle has been involved in an accident causing more than $500 worth of damage.

5. Notice of Sale

File a Notice of Sale with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) after selling your vehicle. This protects you from any future liabilities involving the car.

6. Lien Release (if applicable)

If the vehicle had a loan, you must provide proof that the lien has been satisfied. Obtain a lien release from your lender before completing the sale.

7. Duplicate Title (if needed)

If the vehicle title is lost or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title before the sale can proceed.
