Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Georgia

Selling a car in Georgia requires certain documents to ensure a smooth and legal transaction. Here’s a detailed list of the paperwork you’ll need, along with helpful links to resources for each point. 


1. Original Title 

The title must be signed over to the buyer, indicating the transfer of ownership. 
Ensure all information is accurate and legible.

2. Bill of Sale 

A bill of sale is recommended, even if it’s not legally required, to document the transaction details. 
Include the vehicle’s make, model, year, VIN, sale price, and date of sale.

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement 

Required for vehicles less than 10 years old to disclose the mileage at the time of sale. 
This can be included in the title or as a separate document.

4. Emission Inspection Certificate (if applicable)

If your vehicle is registered in a county that requires emissions testing for EVs and/or hybrids, provide a valid emissions inspection certificate.

5. Lien Release (if applicable) 

If there is a lien on the vehicle, provide a lien release from the lienholder. 
This document proves that the loan has been paid off and the lien has been removed.

Steps to Finalize the Sale 


1. Sign the Title 

Complete the seller’s section of the title and sign it over to the buyer. Ensure all information is accurate. 


2. Provide the Bill of Sale 

Complete and sign the bill of sale. Give a copy to the buyer and keep one for your records. 


3. Complete the Odometer Disclosure 

Fill out the odometer disclosure section on the title or a separate form, and provide it to the buyer. 


4. Submit a Notice of Sale 

Notify the Georgia Department of Revenue of the sale. This can be done online or by submitting a form.

5. Remove License Plates
