Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Connecticut

Selling your car in Connecticut requires several important documents to ensure a smooth and legal transaction. This guide provides a comprehensive list of the paperwork you’ll need, along with helpful links to resources for each step.

Vehicle Title

The most critical document for selling your car is the vehicle title, which proves ownership of the vehicle. Make sure the title is free of liens and signed by both the seller and the buyer.

For more information, visit the Connecticut DMV Title Transfers page.

Bill of Sale

A Bill of Sale is required to document the transaction details, including the sale price, date, and information about the buyer and seller.

You can download the Bill of Sale form from CT DMV

Odometer Disclosure Statement

If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, you need to provide an odometer disclosure statement to record the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale.

Emissions Test Results

In Connecticut, an emissions test is required for most vehicles before they can be sold. Make sure the vehicle has passed the test and include the test results with your paperwork.

Visit the Connecticut Emissions Program for more information and to find a testing location.

Release of Liability

A release of liability form protects you from future legal responsibility once the vehicle is sold. This form notifies the DMV that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle.

Proof of Purchase Price

Include documentation that shows the agreed purchase price. This can be included in the Bill of Sale or as a separate receipt.

Maintenance Records (Optional)

Providing maintenance records can increase the buyer’s confidence in the vehicle’s condition. While not mandatory, it’s a good practice to include these records.

Having all the necessary paperwork prepared will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free car sale in Connecticut. Always check the latest requirements and forms from the Connecticut DMV to make sure you have the most current information.
