Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Colorado

Required Paperwork for Selling a Car in Colorado 

 

1. Vehicle Title (Certificate of Title) 

The vehicle title, also known as the certificate of title, must be signed by both the seller and the buyer. If there are any lienholders, they must also release their interest in the vehicle.

2. Bill of Sale (Form DR 2173) 

A Bill of Sale is not required by Colorado law but is recommended for record-keeping. It should include the sale price, vehicle information, and the names and signatures of both the buyer and seller.

3. Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (Form DR 2175) 

The seller must complete and submit the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability to inform the DMV that the vehicle has been sold. This protects the seller from any liability for the vehicle after the sale.

4. Emissions Test Certificate 

If the vehicle is more than seven years old and the buyer lives in an area that requires emissions testing, the seller must provide a valid emissions test certificate. The certificate must be issued within 90 days of the sale.

5. Odometer Disclosure Statement
