Required Paperwork for Selling a Car in California
1. Vehicle Title (Pink Slip)

2. Bill of Sale
A Bill of Sale is not required by California law but is recommended for record-keeping. It should include the sale price, vehicle information, and the names and signatures of both the buyer and seller.

3. Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (Form REG 138)
The seller must complete and submit the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability to inform the DMV that the vehicle has been sold. This protects the seller from any liability for the vehicle after the sale.

4. Smog Certification
If the vehicle is more than four years old, the seller must provide a valid smog certificate. The certificate must be issued within 90 days of the sale. Certain vehicles, such as hybrids and electric cars, may be exempt.
