Paperwork Needed to Sell or Buy a Car in Arkansas

Selling a car in Arkansas requires a few important documents to ensure the process is legal and smooth. This comprehensive list provides all the necessary paperwork you'll need, along with helpful links to resources for each step.

1. Vehicle Title

The vehicle title is the most critical document. Make sure it is signed by both the seller and the buyer. If there is a lien on the vehicle, you must also provide a lien release.

2. Bill of Sale

A bill of sale provides proof of the transaction and includes details such as the purchase price, vehicle identification number (VIN), and the names and signatures of both parties. It's a good idea to have a bill of sale, even though it might not be required in all cases.

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement

Federal and state laws require an odometer disclosure statement for vehicles less than ten years old. This can often be found on the back of the title or as a separate document.

4. Lien Release

If there is a lien on the vehicle, you need to provide a lien release from the lender. This document confirms that the lender no longer has an interest in the vehicle.

5. Notice of Transfer of Ownership

After selling your vehicle, you should submit a Notice of Transfer of Ownership to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. This helps protect you from future liabilities related to the vehicle.

6. Arkansas Vehicle Registration

Provide the buyer with the current vehicle registration. This helps verify the vehicle's legality and ownership history.
