How to Correctly Fill Out a West Virginia Vehicle Title

Filling out a car title correctly is essential for ensuring a smooth transfer of ownership when selling or buying a vehicle in West Virginia. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you complete the title transfer process accurately:

1. Locate the Title

Before you can fill out the title, you need to have the physical document in hand. If you do not have the title, you may need to apply for a duplicate title through the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

2. Complete the Assignment of Ownership Section

On the back of the title, locate the "Assignment of Ownership" section. This is where the seller must fill in the details for transferring the vehicle:

  • Enter the name and address of the buyer.
  • Include the sale date and sale price.
  • Both the buyer and seller must sign in the designated areas.

3. Odometer Disclosure

If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, you must fill out the odometer disclosure section to record the vehicle's current mileage. This helps prevent fraud and ensures that the mileage is accurately recorded.

4. Lien Release (If Applicable)

If there was a lien on the vehicle and it has been paid off, ensure that the lienholder signs and dates the lien release section of the title. Without this, the transfer process may be delayed.

5. Sign the Title as the Seller

The seller must sign the title in the seller's section. Ensure that the signature matches the name as it appears on the title. If there are multiple owners listed, all owners must sign.

6. Buyer’s Responsibility

Once the seller has completed their portion, the buyer will need to complete the buyer's section and submit the title to the DMV for transfer into their name. This includes paying any applicable title transfer fees.

7. Additional Forms

In some cases, you may need to submit additional forms, such as a Bill of Sale or an Application for Certificate of Title.
