How to Correctly Fill Out a Vermont Vehicle Title

Filling out a car title correctly is a crucial step in the process of selling or transferring ownership of a vehicle in Vermont. To avoid delays or issues with the transfer, ensure that all sections of the title are properly completed. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to fill out a car title in Vermont, along with helpful links.

1. Complete the Seller’s Information

The seller must complete the relevant sections on the back of the Vermont Certificate of Title. This includes the following details:

  • Seller’s printed name and signature
  • Date of sale
  • Odometer reading (for vehicles less than 10 years old)

It’s important that the seller signs exactly as their name appears on the front of the title to avoid any discrepancies.

2. Provide the Buyer’s Information

The buyer must also fill in their details on the back of the title, including:

  • Buyer’s name and address
  • Buyer’s signature

Both the seller and buyer must sign in the correct areas, as indicated on the title.

3. Odometer Disclosure Statement (Required for Vehicles Under 10 Years Old)

Federal law requires that an odometer disclosure statement be completed for vehicles that are less than 10 years old. This is typically included on the title, but if not, you can complete a separate Odometer Disclosure Form. Be sure the reading is accurate and matches the current odometer reading of the vehicle.

4. Bill of Sale

Although the title serves as proof of transfer, Vermont also requires a Bill of Sale for vehicles sold privately. This document should include the vehicle’s sale price, the date of the transaction, and signatures of both the buyer and seller.

5. Remove License Plates

In Vermont, the seller must remove the license plates from the vehicle. They can either transfer the plates to another vehicle or return them to the DMV.

By following these steps and ensuring all sections of the title are filled out correctly, you can complete the transfer of ownership smoothly. Be sure to double-check for accuracy and consult the Vermont DMV for any additional requirements or questions.
