Does a Seller Remove License Plates in Louisiana
1. Remove License Plates Before the Sale
When selling a vehicle in Louisiana, the seller must remove the license plates before the buyer takes possession of the vehicle. The plates do not transfer to the new owner.

2. Return or Transfer Plates
After removing the plates, you have two options:
- Return the Plates: You can return the plates to any Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) location.
- Transfer the Plates: If you plan to purchase another vehicle, you may transfer the license plates to the new vehicle.

3. File a Notice of Sale
