Does a Seller Remove License Plates in Georgia

In Georgia, the seller is required to remove the license plates from the vehicle before completing the sale. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help understand this process:

Remove the Plates

The seller should remove the license plates from the vehicle once the sale is finalized. This is important as the plates remain associated with the seller and not the vehicle.

Return or Transfer the Plates

Return: The seller can return the plates to the local county tag office.
Transfer: If the seller is purchasing another vehicle, they may be able to transfer the plates to their new vehicle. Contact the local county tag office for specific instructions on how to transfer the plates.

Notify the DMV

The seller should notify the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) or their local county tag office that the vehicle has been sold. This can often be done online or via mail.

Bill of Sale

It’s essential to complete a bill of sale that includes the vehicle’s VIN, sale date, and the names and signatures of both the buyer and the seller. This document provides proof that the transaction has taken place and the seller is no longer responsible for the vehicle.

Cancel Insurance: Once the plates have been removed and the sale is complete, the seller should cancel the insurance policy on the sold vehicle.
