Does a Seller Remove License Plates in Colorado

In Colorado, the process for handling license plates during the sale of a vehicle depends on the type of license plates the vehicle has. Here’s what you need to know:

Standard License Plates

For most standard license plates, the plates stay with the vehicle when it is sold. The new owner will use the existing license plates, and the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will update the registration information to reflect the new owner.

Personalized and Specialty License Plates

If the vehicle has personalized or specialty license plates, the seller has the option to retain these plates. To do this, the seller must complete the necessary paperwork and notify the DMV of their intention to keep the plates. The seller can then transfer the plates to another vehicle they own or retain them for future use.

Steps for Sellers

  1. Complete the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (Form DR 2173): This form notifies the DMV that you have sold the vehicle and releases you from liability for the vehicle. You can file this form online or mail it to the DMV.

  2. Provide the Title and Bill of Sale to the Buyer: Ensure that you have completed and signed the title and provided a bill of sale to the buyer.
  3. Decide on License Plates: If you wish to retain personalized or specialty plates, notify the DMV and complete any required forms. If you do not wish to keep the plates, they will stay with the vehicle.
